The University of Virginia is home to one of the most distinguished collections of Buddhist materials in North America, particularly renowned for its holdings in Tibetan literature.
Library Collections
Tibetan Collection
The Tibetan Collection at the University of Virginia is one of the most complete collections in the world. Most of the materials were published in India, Bhutan, Nepal, and Tibet, with extremely small press runs, making this material virtually irreplaceable, out of print, and unique.
The Stanley and Lucie Weinstein Collection
The Stanley and Lucie Weinstein collection, consisting of 11,000 volumes of scholarly works on Buddhism in China and Japan, is a centerpiece of the newly renovated Buddhist and Asian Studies Library and Reading Room in UVA's flagship library, Shannon Library. With this collection, UVA is one of the major holders of Buddhist materials in the country.
Guanhailou Collection
Acquired from Soren Edgren, an expert in rare Chinese Books, the collection includes rare books, ink rubbings, scrolls, wood blocks and calligraphic materials, with important examples of Buddhist printing in East Asia. The collection is split between UVA’s Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library and Rare Book School.
